Supervillain AU
For Vatheon Curse #46, the superhero curse.
Bro Strider was always a peculiar boy, even from a very young age. Most of his attention was spent on the ventriloquist doll, Lil Cal, that he always carried around with him. His parents just left him be because they were neglectful jerks and figured he'd grow out of it. He didn't. However, late in his teenage years he was finally granted a family member he could relate to. A baby brother by the name of Dave. With distant parents like theirs, Bro took it upon himself to stick close to Dave and raise him. That became especially necessary after both parents died in a tragic accident.
While he had no real job, Bro managed to get a workshop for himself so he could become an inventor. They were low on funds and most of Bro's creations ended up only half finished, but the two Strider brothers didn't let that keep them down. They looked out for each other and Dave had a tendency to watch as Bro tinkered in his workshop. With his interest in both puppets and technology, it was only natural he ended up combining the two. After years of hard work, he managed to create a device that allowed him to control a puppet's actions with his thoughts. It was used on Lil Cal first, of course, because no subject would be more fitting. At first Cal's movements were awkward and had a tendency to halt halfway through as Bro trained himself to use the device. Getting the puppet to walk from end of the room to the other was considered a great achievement. That's when he began duplicating the receiver so that he could control more puppets at the same time. That turned out to be even trickier.
And then tragedy struck. Despite having told Dave a million times to stay away from the half-finished transportation device because it was 'highly unstable and more nuclear than grandmama's armpits', the kid clearly found it necessary to mess with it anyway. There was an explosion, half the workshop was blown to smithereens and Dave, now thirteen years old, got caught in the blast. Death was instantaneous. Bro blamed himself, but as he knelt over Dave's body, he was hit by an interesting notion. If he could clone his younger brother, it'd be like nothing ever happened. He wasted no time with gathering a few bits of genetic material before giving Dave a proper burial.
However, he was still short on cash and a necessary material for the cloning device proved to be the rare metal Wonderflonium. So rare, even, that there was only one case of it in existence. In order to gain more money to fund his invention, Bro slowly began to turn to a life of crime. It started with robbing one bank using a few of his customized puppets. And then another bank. Those losers never even knew what hit them. Finally, he sent his little minions after the grand prize, the Wonderflonium. That too turned out to be hilariously easy. News spread quickly and within months, there was word of a mysterious Puppet Master.
After two years of hard work, he managed to finish his cloning device. In order to test it, he used some genetic material of his own. That gave birth to Rose, after which Bro realized he had the machine set to "female". A bit of tweaking later, he created Dirk, who seemed to have no flaws and confirmed the device was ready to be used for Dave. However, Bro had left the window to the workshop open and some pesky crow flew in right as he flipped the switch. It got stuck in the device as well and that's how Davesprite was born. Half Dave, half bird and with some pretty weird powers. Of course, Davesprite didn't consider himself to be the real Dave and of course, Bro insisted that he was. Because with the same memories and the same genetic material, why wouldn't he be Dave? Besides, the cloning device had shortcircuited pretty badly and the one-of-a-kind Wonderflonium had cracked, so it's not like Bro could try again.
Even after succeeding in cloning his younger brother, Bro didn't halt his life of crime. He continued to steal money for more inventions and, if they happened to stumble upon his puppets, attempted to humiliate a few superheroes. That didn't sit well with Dirk and Davesprite, who both ended up leaving his side to join the hero ranks. Now he had no one but Rose, Lil Cal and the rest of his continuously growing army of puppets.
